Pride Month: Discussing Coming Out

It is important to provide a safe and supportive environment to our LGBTQ+ youth, especially as they are going through the journey of coming out. The experience is unique to each individual, but as family and friends we can play a role of safety and support for those around us. Some people may start feeling that they are “different” from their peers at a young age, but it may not be clear what makes them feel that way. For most kids, gender identity and orientation is more readily identified by the child when they go through puberty. While some are readily able to identify and express the way they feel, other children and teens may question how they identify and may find themselves feeling lonely or confused. Parents and family members can be helpful by advocating and providing safe spaces for kids to express their interests without judgment. It is also important to support diversity among friendships and throughout your child’s environment or activities.

Acceptance is a large part of the coming out journey, it starts with the child accepting themselves, but acceptance from parents and family members is also an important factor. Acceptance can take time and support, for parents as well as kids. Throughout the process, be sure to reaffirm that you accept and love your child and respond to them in an affirming and supportive way. Look for opportunities for your child to connect with LGBTQ+ resources and organizations while celebrating diversity seen in books, movies, and your community. There are many support resources for the LGBTQ+ community, but also for family members as well.
